Sally can assist you with:

Eating Disorders

Sally Bowman has 25+ years of experience working with patients with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and disordered eating patterns. She uses an individualized approach that involves working with the patients where they are with food and their bodies and guiding them to recovery. The overall goal for patients is for them to be able to eat more intuitively and make peace with food and their bodies. To achieve this, I often provide structure via meal/snack ideas (or meal plans initially) to assure that goals are being met. This allows the patient to gradually feel empowered to make their own choices verses being told exactly what to eat by the dietitian.

Food Allergy/Chemical Sensitivities and Adverse Food Reactions

Food allergies, food sensitivities, and food intolerance are often used interchangeably and inappropriately. In fact, there is active debate in scientific and medical circles as to how to define and use these three terms. The general consensus is that food allergy can be defined as any adverse reaction to food that involves our immune system. This further breaks down into two kinds of reactions, food allergy, and food sensitivity. Food intolerance does not involve the immune system.

Digestive/Gut Health (IBS, IBD, Crohns, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac Disease)

The gastrointestinal tract is vital to a person’s health not only for its role in absorbing nutrients from food but also for its key role in producing immune cells and brain neurotransmitters.

The latest clinical research shows that the health of the GI tract is key to the overall health of the individual. Addressing your gut issues can lead to additional benefits such as normalizing metabolism, brain health, and improved immune function. To achieve optimal health, an individualized approach is utilized that involves diet and supplement recommendations. The overall goal is to minimize any GI symptoms while keeping the diet as inclusive (vs restrictive) as possible.

Cardio-metabolic Health

The three core components to metabolic syndrome are:  insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension.  Dyslipidemia means that your blood fats are not in optimal range.  If you have been told by your doctor that you need to be on a statin drug to lower cholesterol, you may want to get more information.  By having a comprehensive cardio-metabolic blood test you will discover what type of LDL you have as well as other pertinent cardiometabolic markers.

Type II Diabetes

Diabetes Type II can be prevented in most cases.  If your blood sugar levels (and Hemoglobin A1C) are creeping up, it is still possible to take charge of your health and bring them back to a normal range.  Sally can help patients control blood sugar through diet, exercise, and macronutrient balance.

Sports Nutrition

It is no secret that proper nutrition is needed for peak sports performance. Many athletes and weekend warriors are confused about specifics of how much protein to eat and what type of fuel mix (carbohydrate, protein, fat) will maximize energy levels. Common questions are “Do I need a carbohydrate replacement beverage during and/or after my workout,” “would supplements or ergogenic aids improve my performance,” and “why do I get muscle cramps.” Get the answers to questions like these and more. Whether you are a top level athlete or training for your first 5K race, you can obtain the nutrition tools to feel and perform your best.

On a personal level, Sally is are very committed to her personal health and wellness by spending quality time with friends and family, and playing golf, tennis and pickleball.

Cancer Prevention and Cancer Treatment

Two-thirds of cancer rates are attributed to diet and lifestyle factors.

There are over 10,000 phytochemicals that play a vital role in keeping your cells healthy.  The benefits of getting plenty of plant foods is well known.   Sally will help you by identifying the nutritional adequacy of your diet and making recommendations, which could include meal ideas and recipes.

Nutrient Testing

SpectraCell Micronutrient Testing utilizes exclusive, patented micronutrient test measures to evaluate intracellular vitamin, mineral antioxidant, and amino/fatty acid status within your white blood cells.  This testing conveys how well nutrients are utilized at the cellular level.

Most other micronutrient tests measure only blood levels of nutrients which may not reflect what is happening in the cells.  Therefore, SpectaCell testing can be an invaluable tool to identify vitamin, mineral and antioxidant deficiencies that have been shown to suppress the immune system and affect the likelihood of developing many degenerative diseases such as arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes to name a few.

Nutrient status can impact a variety of conditions: diabetes, fatigue, mood disorders, hypo/hyper thyroid, weight management, sports nutrition,  osteopenia/osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, migraines, women’s health, hypertension, inflammation, stress tolerance, and many other conditions.

Intuitive Eating

The intuitive eating process teaches individuals how to recapture the ability to listen to their bodies and discover the eating plan that works best for them. The Intuitive Eating process will enable the individual to reject the diet mentality and make peace with food and their body. Reconnecting with true hunger and fullness cues is possible through Intuitive Eating.

Intuitive eating is the best place to start if an individual has been chronically dieting or has any type of disordered eating.

Weight Challenges

Sally recognizes that thoughts and feelings about weight can be a complex area to explore.  Sally takes a comprehensive view of health parameters that may be impacting a person’s body before developing a plan of action to assist with finding some solutions to bring about more balance. Some of those parameters considered are: fuel mix of the diet (ratio of protein, carbohydrate and fats), family health history/personal health history, sleep habits, gut and thyroid health.

Some of the practical areas that may be covered are:  meal/snack ideas to fit busy, active routines, restaurant guidance, cooking shortcuts, exercise tips, motivation and more.

Sally believes that long-term solutions to weight issues can be found and maintained when lifestyle habits support ongoing healthful eating.  Part of this process often involves addressing emotional eating and reconnecting with hunger and fullness cues which can be done through intuitive eating principles.
